“Now you’ve got the Polish people, coming over here, stealing racist abuse from us Asians. It’s not right!”

15 January 2008

After work last night I headed over to Kilburn, which is nearly my old West Hampstead stomping grounds. I had a bite at the pleasant (and certainly well-priced) Small and Beautiful restaurant, then wandered to the nearby The Good Ship. They’ve begun a Monday comedy night there; last night it was only £3 to get in.

The first comedian, Luke Toulson, was quite funny. I liked his easygoing style. The handful of comedians in the middle were far less appealing.

But the headliner was female Muslim comedian Shazia Mirza. I was shocked that she was doing a gig in a Kilburn pub for less than a fiver: she got quite famous after 9/11, has been on telly, done quiz shows, and is even on display at the National Portrait Gallery at the moment. I wasn’t complaining, though: she had us all laughing with a lot of politically incorrect humour, often at her own expense.

The Good Ship looks like a pretty cool bar just to hang out in, but definitely go for their comedy nights. You can’t beat the price.
